The live action sequences in the Nestene Lair were shot in a disused paper Mill outside Cardiff. The original plan was for the physical effects crew to provide practical explosions in the ceiling.

Time, budget, and the state of disrepair of the location necessitated the construction of a 1/6 scale miniature of the ceiling, which was sequentially blown apart with black powder and petrol charges.
