HORIZON
LAST FLIGHT OF THE COLUMBIA, BBC2

In order to show the final moments of the Space Shuttle Columbia, we elected to shoot an eight foot model of the spacecraft on a scaffold rig against a cyclorama. Smoke and dry ice was vented through the nose of the model, and directed back along the fuselage by means of two electric fans.

The sequence was shot hand held to impart an 'air to air' photography feel to the footage. High speed vibration effects were achieved by bolting a motor with an eccentric cam to the camera body.

The show was nominated for an RTS award for Best Visual Effects 2004.
